remove write protection

Well, sometimes it may happen that you’re just not able to format your device or SD card or memory card in your windows pc and I know it sucks. Its because of write protection error something similar to the image shown above. No its not your Micro SD card‘s fault its just a simple windows error which can be fixed by simple manipulation.

How to Remove Write Protection from SD Card ?

See there are 3 steps which are very simple and easy to do and even a 5th grade kid can do it so don’t panic and it isn’t a rocket science to sd card write protected issue.

How to Remove write protection from USB Pen drive ?

Removing write protection from pen drive and removing write protection from micro sd card is one an the same so you can use the same method to remove write protection from both.

Solution 1: Check if your Pen Drive have a lock

Sometimes it may happen that by default the pen drive have a lock so before formatting it please make sure that your pen drive don’t have any kind of security pin or lock and if it is there then make sure to remove it or use it while formatting your micro sd card or pen drive.

Solution 2: Scan your SD Card / Pen Drive via Anti Virus

Make sure your Micro SD card and your pen drive isn’t have any anti virus and if they do make sure to remove it using any anti virus and if you don’t have any anti virus in your computer then download a free anti virus such as AVG Anti virus and scan your SD card or Pen drive before using it and before formatting it in order to avoid getting write protection error.

Solution 3: Fix it with System Registry

The 3rd best way to solve this contagious issue is by fixing it via system registry and in order to do that you need to get inside the system registry. Just follow the below steps.

  • Click on Start
  • Run > type Regedit > click on Registry Editor
  • Now follow up this fath in Registry Editor
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentConrolSet/Control/StorageDevicePoi
  • Now you’ll able to see write protection option just click on that.
  • And change the value data to “o”.
  • voila you’re done!

Update (7th February, 2016) Solution 4: Open Diskpart to remove write protection from Memory Card/USB Drive

As many people told me that the above solution 3 isn’t working I’ve come up with one more method in order to remove write protection error from Memory Card or USB Drive. Follow the steps as I’ve have mentioned below.

remove write protection error

  • Click on Start > search for CMD > Right click and Run as Administrator.
  • Now type “diskpart” in CMD without quotes and press the enter button.
  • Now after doing this type “list disk” (without quotes) and once again press enter button.
  • Now tyle “Select disk 1” in order to select your SD Card or USB drive and press enter button.
  • Now in order to remove write protection error type “attributes disk clear readonly” without quotes and press the enter button.
  • Now type exit to complete the process and you’re done!
  • Now just try to format your Micro SD Card or USB drive you won’t be seeing any write protection popup error.

Update (10th February, 2016): We’ve been getting lots of comments that you’re not able to fix the write protection error still. Do not worry, we are still trying to figure out another process which may work. Please bookmark this page for further updates.

This should fix and remove write protection from micro sd card now and you’ll be able to format your sd card or pendrive.

I have tried the regedit part but I can’t see StorageDevicepoi I only see “storage”.. so I’m stuck there, I tried the last method going into CMD but that didn’t work even after it stated it was cleared. When I tried to run the format thing again, it said disk write protected

Also can not find “storagedeivicepoi” only find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentConrolSet/Control/Storage…..default REG_SZ value not set

      Hi Kelly,

Actually in most of the Windows PC it is StorageDevicePoi is the normal value set but I see as in your case it isn’t. But don’t worry I’ve updated the article with another newer method in order to remove write protection error, so you can try the newest method and revert back if you find any more difficulty or problem.

When trying to format the SD card the format command fails saying the disc is write protected, also when trying to delete files in windows it says the disc is write protected – tried all above solutions but still write protected.

Tried all methods. None worked. 3rd solution – no registry key found by the name: “storagedeivicepoi”.

4th solution: seems like it’s going to work, but it goes back to being ‘write protected’. I tried to formt it before the message popped up, but I got the same message – “The disk is write protected.”

    • Shaswat February 6, 2015 at 4:28 pm - Reply

      Hi Chort,

After you complete the 4th method you need to restart your computer or else it won’t work. So make sure you restart your computer to remove this write protected error.

      • Kristina February 13, 2015 at 10:57 pm - Reply

None of the above have worked for me. I have a micro sd and it just says it is unable to complete the format when I try to format it through my computer. When I us a SD formatter I downloaded it states memory card is write protected still and to release the write protected switch.

I have tried all the above methods & even the tape method & still write protected! I’m gettin pretty frustrated! Someone please help!…I’m not an idiot I know about the lock, etc etc…there is literally no reason why i cant delete or add files to this card!

  17. Jim May 18, 2015 at 2:58 am - Reply

The first three did not work for me but the Update Solution 4 did work AFTER I rebooted my system with the micro SD still in the slot. Don’t know if this made a difference or not. Anyway the SD is formatting now and I thank you.

It has been a frustrating ordeal and I’d like to know whose idea it was to lock our files/drives without asking? Is Windows responsible with one of their many updates? Forget trying to change an individual file or folder as it only gets ignored. It appears to remove the write protection but does not.
    Thanks again for your help.

Hello, I’ve seen all of these steps on many sites but it hasn’t worked for me.
StorageDevicePolicies in the registry doesn’t exist for me.
There is no physical or logical lock on the USB pen I use as an adapter.
I did do an antivirus scan, it found something but it wasn’t what I was looking for, it was still write-protected.
And I did the diskpart thing in the command line, and it said that it successfully removed the write-protection but it didn’t work anyway.
I’m getting so frustrated trying to format my SD card. Worst case scenario, I have to buy a new one.
The two ways to format on windows (one through the computer window, where you access the disks, and the other through Computer Management, found through control panel) I’ve tried both, they just said that the formatting wasn’t successful, then I tried SD Formatter v4 and that software said that it was write-protected.
    Hopefully you got another fix.

    • Chris January 25, 2016 at 11:18 pm - Reply

Same problem here. With diskpart it displayed first, the write-protection was removed, but when I tried to format the SD with SD formatter, it said again the SD’s write-protected.

Also I can “delete” the files on the SD card over Windows Explorer (no error msg because protection or anything like that), but when I’m checking the SD card again, all the before “deleted” files are back again.

      I’m using Win10Pro…

None of these worked for me either – but – when I put my SanDisk SD card into my 2008 Macbook (takes a USB card reader though) and used the Mac disk utility program to format the SD card (DOS FAT) the write protection was gone. After putting it back into my Windows 10 PC it worked just fine there too.

I have no idea why this worked but I thought I let you know.

I tried the regedit method bt it isn’t workin for me. It shows that 0 (and not o) is already set for the value… bt even after that its nt working… i had my marshmallow update a few weeks back and they said that aftr updating my sd card wouldn’t b used as a storage device as usual as before… so what does that mean in my case?
